Service Description
Motivational Interviewing for Disability and Cognitive Support Contexts Facilitated by Dr Lee Cubis, Clinical Psychologist Motivational Interviewing (MI) is a respectful, evidence-based communication style that helps people explore and resolve ambivalence about change. Rooted in partnership and compassion, MI is particularly useful for professionals working alongside people with disability, where autonomy, dignity, and behavioural support often intersect. This interactive workshop provides a practical introduction to MI, with a focus on core skills and how to adapt them ethically and effectively for people with cognitive disability. You’ll also learn how MI can be used to actively support a person’s decision-making, aligning with the principles of supported decision making. This includes strategies to ensure the person’s preferences, values and goals are heard, respected and prioritised; even in complex or high-risk situations. You’ll leave with tools you can apply immediately, whether in therapeutic conversations, support planning or everyday engagement. This workshop is ideal for: • Allied health professionals • Psychologists • Nurses • Counsellors • Support coordinators • Case managers • Disability service managers • Support workers • Therapy assistants Whether you're supporting people with intellectual disability, acquired brain injury, neurodivergence, progressive disorders or other cognitive impairments, this training will help you build more collaborative, person-centred conversations around behaviour, support and change.
