Workshop 2: Functional Behaviour Assessment
Workshop 2: Functional Behaviour Assessment
Positive Behaviour Support Series Workshop 2 (incl. GST)
Service Description
Positive Behaviour Support is an evidence-based approach that seeks to improve the quality of life for people with disability. To do this, we first need to know "why" behaviours of concern are occurring so we can match strategies to individual environments, needs and preferences. Functional behaviour assessment is the backbone of effective PBS, as it encompasses assessment at the individual, environment and broader systems levels. Through a human-centred and neuro-affirming lens, This workshop shows you how to collaboratively goal set, define, prioritise and operationalise behaviours of concern, gather direct and indirect data and build and test functional hypotheses. You’ll learn to distinguish setting events, antecedents and 'triggers', conduct functional analyses and identify functionally equivalent replacement behaviours. Case studies and small‑group activities give you real practice with data collection tools and making sense of observations. By the end you’ll have greater knowledge and resources for linking assessment to intervention and working collaboratively to improve quality of life. Workshop 2 will cover the following topics: • Values and goals • Clarifying what are (and what are not) behaviours of concern • Risk assessment and prioritising behaviours • Functional behaviour assessment • Direct and indirect assessment • Formulation • Functional analysis • Identifying functionally equivalent replacement behaviour (if applicable) Who is this workshop for? • Behaviour Support Practitioners • Allied health professionals • Psychologists • Nurses • Support coordinators • Case managers • Disability service managers • Senior support staff • Therapy assistants
