Workshop 3: Positive Behaviour Support Interventions and Implementation
Positive Behaviour Support Series
Service Description
Once you have a sound functional behaviour assessment, you need the right intervention toolkit to proactively support improved quality of life, reduce behaviours of concern and provide a blue-print for managing risk. This workshop focuses on developing Positive Behaviour Support interventions that align with the person’s goals, sensory and emotional needs, ways of communicating and the broader context of their life. You will learn how to use assessment outcomes to guide PBS planning, create proactive environmental strategies, and build skills in ways that are linked to behaviours of concern and quality of life. We explore principles of communication, co-regulation, as well as approaches such as reinforcement that are used ethically. The workshop also covers maintaining progress across environments, supporting generalisation in meaningful ways, and planning for safety during periods of distress. Through case examples and practical activities you will build confidence to design multicomponent supports collaboratively and to work alongside the person and their network as an effective, values-aligned team. Topics: • Values and goal setting • Clarifying your role • Antecedent-based (environmental) strategies • Skill development strategies • Responsive strategies (e.g. co-regulation, reinforcement) • Affect regulation strategies • Maintenance and generalisation • Incident and crisis management • Restrictive practices • PBS as a team approach; engaging key stakeholders and other disciplines Given that consistency is key for PBS interventions to be effective, the more members of a team who understand the principles of PBS, the better. Therefore, this workshop is considered suitable for: • Behaviour Support Practitioners • Allied health professionals • Psychologists • Nurses • Support coordinators • Case managers • Disability service managers • Senior support staff • Therapy assistants Please note that a sound understanding of functional behaviour assessment and functional analysis is expected for those attending this workshop
